The Food

I have been to Switzerland!  Jules and I had four fantastic days in Switzerland, where we ate lots and lots of delicious food and did lots of lovely exercise.

We arrived in Montreux at lunchtime on our first day, and the first order of  business was to find some traditional Swiss rosti!

It wasn't pretty, but my goodness it tasted good!

After a wander from our lovely hotel into Montreux afternoon tea was a rather more refined affair.

One of the strangest, yet nicest things about Switzerland was the fact that its cuisine is so influenced by France, Germany and Italy.  I'd never been to Switzerland before but a lot of things felt familiar.  One of the things that was familiar but very definitely a cut above the English versions was the pizza we had at an Italian pizzeria on our first night.  It was as light as a feather and crispy and laden with prosciutto and parmesan shavings and went unpictured because we were so busy eating it.  For pudding there was proper Italian (Swiss!) gelato which was amazing.

The bill was presented in a really cute little crate...and we paid with exciting Swiss money!

On our second day we went rather French - is there anything better than steak, frites and red wine?!

The answer would have to be steak, frites and red wine followed by crepes eaten outdoors whilst wandering around a lovely little Christmas market by Lake Geneva!

On our third day we headed into the mountains on an amazing train journey.

It was all a bit Germanic up there, including the food..although not totally Germanic.  I loved this menu.

Lunch was a hearty and rather Teutonic toasted ham and cheese sandwich with the world's biggest portion of chips, served with hot apple punch.

Afternoon tea was cake with a view, and for supper we snacked on Swiss cheese, crackers and fruit on the train whilst watching a glorious sunset.  Perfect!

Our fourth day was our last day, and we started it in great style with a run followed by the most scenic breakfast I've ever had.

We distinguished ourselves by fitting in lunch and afternoon tea before leaving for the airport!

Where, as we'd been in Switzerland, there was one thing we couldn't leave without!

The Exercise

We ran!  Jules and I both love long slow runs and we did two beauties along the shores of Lake Geneva.

I was thrilled to bits that Sunday's run was not only a wonderful experience, but also got my half-marathon training back on track with no leg problems at all!  And even better, I also did a 38 minute threshold session (5x5 with 2 mins easy) on the Tuesday after we got back which went really, really well.  I did it on my stopwatch app rather than Runkeeper but I went on Map My Run when I got home and worked out that my average pace was roughly 08:53 - to say that I was thrilled was an understatement!

All in all this is one of the best food and exercise weeks I've had in a long time, and my whole Swiss trip was a wonderful experience shared with a wonderful friend - I'll treasure the memories forever.
