The Exercise

I haven't blogged for ages!  This is partly because I pulled a muscle in my left thigh a couple of weeks ago whilst pushing myself a bit too hard on my long run (too fast, up a hill, over-excited because I'd just bought my pace down to less than 10 minutes per mile which is fast for me...something went twang).  I had to cut my run short at about 55 minutes.

Since then I've been resting and stretching a lot, and have done a couple of much slower runs.  I was thrilled to bits to do two almost-back-to-normal runs last week though.  One was an absolutely glorious, frosty-cold early-morning one.

Thursday's run was a very quick one as I didn't have much time, but there was zero leg pain, and I was almost back to normal speed!  I was very happy.

Apart from running there's been cycling to work and back (including in a hailstorm...scary) and Cross Fit.  The weather's starting to make cycling difficult though, and I really miss long Summer evenings where it was possible to run after work.  I'm definitely slowing down into Winter mode, complete with permanent desire to hibernate.  Although having said that we did get out for a brisk walk this morning which I really enjoyed even though it was grey and disgusting and dark outside!

The Food

Again, not much to report.  I met a very dear friend in York for the day a couple of Sundays ago and we spent the whole day eating and talking - it was bliss!  We had coffee and pastries in Betty's, a very good lunch in Cafe Rouge and afternoon tea in The Cocoa House which I'd heartily recommend.  Jen had what she said was the best hot chocolate she'd ever had, and I had coffee and a SERIOUSLY chocolatey triple chocolate brownie.  Well, if you're going to have chocolate...HAVE chocolate!  I'd like to go back and try some of their savoury dishes made with chocolate...and having just looked at the breakfast menu I'm now desperate to have breakfast there!

We also had a nice meal in ASK Italian in York with Mum and Dad.  I had a fantastic robust spicy sausage, courgette and tomato gnocchi dish which I really enjoyed, followed by chocolate ice-cream.

On the home front I'm making lots of hearty casseroles, and thanks to Dad I'm eating LOTS of marrow.  In fact I'm having a bit of a love affair with marrow.  I don't know why people say it's bland and tasteless, it's got its own very definite taste and it's DELICIOUS!  I've particularly been enjoying Baked Marrow Amatriciana, but I've also discovered that it's surprisingly good in Thai Red Curry.  I've just roasted a batch to make into soup, and I'm going to make the insides into cake for the office.
